What are procedures for proctoring an online test?

The following is a sample outline of verbal instructions that may help you when proctoring a testing session.

Greet the students and say: Please clear your desks of everything except for a calculator and a pen or pencil. If you need scratch paper during the test, raise your hand and I will provide you with a piece of paper.

Students are permitted to have a four-function calculator, a piece of blank scratch paper and a pencil or pen to work on problems. Any scratch paper used must be provided by the proctor if requested by the student. For security purposes, all scratch paper must be collected and destroyed by the proctor after testing is complete.

Say: Please turn off cell phones, smart watches and other electronic devices. There should be no talking during testing. You will not be penalized for guessing. I cannot help you regarding any questions you have about a specific test item, so please just do the best you can.

Write the web page URL someplace where students can see it easily (webxam.org).

At this point, say: We are about to begin the test. Make sure that your web browser is running. Access this website (point to the web page URL).

The test that you will be taking consists of [fill in appropriate number] items. Use your left mouse button to select the radio box next to the correct answer. At any time before submitting the test, you may go back through the test and check your answers. You will have an average of 1 minute per question. For example, if you are giving a 40-item test, you will have 40 minutes to complete it. A timer is displayed at all times to alert you to your remaining time. A ten-minute, five-minute, and one-minute warning message will be displayed when you have ten, five, and one minute remaining. When you are finished with the test and are ready to submit it, click on the “Submit” button at the bottom of the test. If you do not submit the completed test within the allowed time, the software will automatically submit the test when time is up.

After pressing the “Submit” button, you will no longer have access to the test, and your test will be scored. You will receive your score immediately.

Once students have accessed the web page, say: Login at the WebXam home page with your login username and access code. To access the test, click on the button next to the test you are about to take that says “Take Now.” Once you begin the test, a timer will start on your computer, and time remaining will be displayed on your screen. Use your mouse and the navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen to navigate through the test. You can begin the test now.

If students are testing for the first time, they will be asked to confirm acceptance of the WebXam User Agreement after logging in. During testing, be prepared to assist students in submitting their tests for scoring when they are finished.

Once a student completes a test, submits it, and receives his/her score, the testing session is complete. At your discretion, you may allow students to quietly leave or to sit quietly while other students finish their tests.
